Well, I don't think your pastor is right. Paul did see the Lord Jesus, and this is how he claimed his apostleship before the people in the Corinth church. In 1 Corinthians 9:1, “...Have I not seen Jesus our Lord?...” This verse is, in fact, in reference to the Damascus experience. 1 Corinthians 15:8 supports that as well.
In Acts 9:17, the verse that talks about Paul’s encounter with Ananias, ...“Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came…
The word “appeared” in Greek is ὀφθείς, (lit. having been seen) (verb, aorist, passive, participle, singular, nominative, masculine) from the root word ὁράω (to see). [Something he received by sight.]
Therefore, Paul did see Jesus our Lord, not just heard His voice. Yes, Paul, according to Acts 9:3, saw a light from heaven, but one must accept the fact that there are times our Lord Jesus described as the Light. Many scholars agreed that this light from heaven, in Paul’s Damascus experience, is the glory of Christ.
Well, I think we should be even more careful reading the Word of God, not just picking from a verse only. Hope it helps.
God bless,
Robin
